Icy mooncake

Icy mooncakes come in all kinds of flavor. The past night, Sept. 12th, was the Chinese mid. Autumn festival, celebrating the full moon with sweet cakes and lighting lanterns. Traditional mooncakes are brown crusted with lotus seeds paste and salty egg yolk fillings. But now mooncakes come in many flavors. During my stay in Hong Kong, I had the rock & roll (brown), cookie and cream(left white), grape(light purple), and almond pudding flavor moon cakes from Saint Honore bakery. I also tried their other flavors, one of my favorite is the Sesame and Pine nut.

Korean Tofu House

Because of hurricane Irene, my route from Hong Kong to Philly was obstructed. I stayed in LA for a couple of days until the first flight available to Philly. Luckily I got family and friends in LA. Plus I got to go to Korean tofu house; love the hot tofu stone pot.

Last meal before leaving HK

I am not fond of fast food in America, it has been years since I have eaten fast food. However, I do love the apple pie and the special sweet potato pie from the Hong Kong McDonalds. They are super crispy outside, and warm sweet inside.

more more desserts from Hong Kong

Egg custards made in egg shells. These were very dense and creamy.

Left is the mango with black tapioca, on the right is fried durian. I never like durian; didn't taste it, so I can't say if is good or not.

All the Chickens

At almost all the big meals in Hong Kong, there is a chicken dish.

Dinner at The Mon

My favourite dish from The Mon is the Japanese omelet, like a soft fluffy pillow, the eggs are folded into many layers. There are other great dishes too. My cousins loved the fried cheese. My sister like the ginko nuts, I like them grilled. The dessert we had was sweet potato mochi, very soft and delicious.

dim sum

DimSum is a meal consists of many different small dishes, similar to Tapas from Spain.

Some of the small dishes include, pork small intestines and duck tongues.

There are many varieties of dishes, all kinds of flavors and ways of cooking.

Here we have chicken feet, spicy fish head, pork buns pan seared on both sides, and fish scallion pancakes.

BEST MEAL so far

Thinly sliced Yellow Jack, each slice melt in your mouth.

A trio of sashimi, Toro (fatty tuna about 13$US per slice), salmon, and Akagai.

From top Tamago (egg), Aji and Uni.

Clockwise from top, miso Cod, clams and soft tofu hot pot, and then salmon and prawn roe, then we had yakitori squid, eel and ginkgo nuts.

On the left is makuro tuna in slimy white yam paste (gross texture but refreshing taste), then for dessert I had red bean and green tea ice-cream. My stomach looked like a cannon ball after the meal, but is all worth it!

desserts in HK

With every meal come desserts. The top is a traditional brown sugar steamed cake, one of my favourite, and not many places have them anymore. The steamed cake is not so sweet, is steamy warm and very soft and spongy. Then there are the puddings. Left are baked egg puddings with taro paste filling; warm, soft and sweet with a crusty top. Yummmm. Right is the mango pudding, one of my family favourite.

Dragon Fruit

The fruits are so light and refreshing tasting, I love it! They are very good for digestion, and will help after many big greasy meals, clearing out the stomach. Definitely one of my favourite fruit.

Street Fish Balls

While my twin and I were shopping in Mongkok, we came across many food stalls; we had curry fish balls and fish siumai. I always love HK street food, great snacks. Although my twin insist that 7-eleven has the best curry fish balls.

Flight to Hong Kong

I am currently in HK. My flight was a long journey from Philly to Dallas Fort Worth to Los Angeles. Wait in LA for 8 hours then continued with a 14 hour long flight to HK. During the 8hrs! in LA, I meet up with some of my family and had dinner at Curry House. The dishes there are pretty decent, I had the curry eel sizzling stone bowl. Tasty meal before a long flight.

"WISH" i am currently snacking on...HK street roasted chestnut

When I was still in Hong Kong, I will walk the streets and smell out the roasted chestnut street vendor. It is my favorite street food in the winter; hugging the warm brown bag of roasted chestnut with a wonderful smell following you. I miss it. There are no street vendors here, what come close is just packaged cooked chestnut that are void of any warm toastiness. I did eat at least a pound of chestnut when I was there.

Back to Philly

Now, back from my trip to Hong Kong and Seoul. Back to the daily grind, no more goofing off and simply just enjoying life and be carefree! no more vacation. Terribly miss Hong Kong and Seoul. They were such lively cities, stores and places open late, crowded streets, great food, cafes where u can go at midnight for coffee and play board games. I miss them. I miss all the wonderful food, and the energy of a buzzing city. I will soon post about Seoul.

Hong Kong: desserts

Desserts spots in Hong Kong are quite popular where tiny places serve only desserts, really good desserts. With my cousins, we went to this well known spot near time square. We ordered black sesame sweet dumpling in herbal dates sweet tea, dumpling in sweet almond soup and steamed egg pudding. I loved the sweet warm dumpling filled with the tasty black sesame paste. Also the egg pudding was so perfectly soft and smooth, and warm and light when you eat it, just heavenly.
